Having a checking account of your own may be something you have been considering for quite some time. In fact, you may have already made one or more attempts to apply for an account, only to end up getting your application rejected.
If you are like most folks, when you have been rejected one or more times, it doesn’t make a lot of sense to keep going back for more punishment.
After all, nobody likes the feeling of rejection. And, it makes it even harder for you to go back for more if you do not exactly know why you are getting rejected in the first place.
Most people who cannot seem to get approved for a checking account are concerned that the reason for their rejection is because of their low credit score. The credit – or FICO – score is certainly one way that creditors and lenders measure your risk-worthiness. However, you may be surprised to learn that your FICO score has absolutely nothing to do with whether you are approved for a checking account.
Rather, checking account approval (or more accurately: rejection) has to do with something called ChexSystems. This is a national database shared by most banks in the U.S. These banks use this database on a daily basis to exchange information among each other about “problem” customers. Such problem customers could be flagged, for example, by having had too many bounced checks, the customer having left the bank while still owing the bank money for past overdrafts, suspected check fraud, or other reasons.
No matter what the reason, if your name shows upon on ChexSystems you will likely get rejected by any bank that uses this database to review prospective checking account customers. And, given that 95% of banks subscribe to this database, you will have a lot of trouble getting an account.
If you are looking for banks that offer checking accounts with no credit check, here are 5 tips to help you get your own checking account:
1. Find out if you are on ChexSystems:
Just visit the official ChexSystems website or call them and request that they send you an official ChexSystems Consumer Report.
2. Ask them to fix any errors:
If your report indicates that your name does indeed appear on this database – but you feel that the reasons are incorrect or the result of errors – submit a request to ask them to remove these items from your report.
3. Find a non-ChexSystems bank:
A handful of banks advertise themselves as non-ChexSystems banks. These are those that promise never to check this special banker’s database to see if your name shows up there when you are applying for a new checking account.
4. Look for a second chance checking bank:
Another name for these special banks that will not check your banking “credit report” is second chance checking banks. These banks will include this kind of wording on their websites or other advertising materials.
5. Build a list of 5 second chance checking banks:
Now, put together a list of at least 5 of these banks. You should have no trouble getting approved for an account from any one of these banks. That said, take your time in comparing their other features, such as number of local branches in your area, whether they offer online banking, the savings account interest rates they offer, and other features and benefits. Then, go ahead and apply to the bank that seems right for you.
Take these 5 tips into account in order to get yourself a checking account with a bank who will offer you an account without checking your banking history first.
